Simple Solution to Stop Beating Yourself Up by Michelle D. Howe

Recently, I’ve had many conversations about how we beat ourselves up with what we say to ourselves audible or not.  Due to dealing with this in my own life, I have a heightened awareness of it.  What I’ve noticed is we tend to worry about the bullying done to us, our kids or friends and not realize how we to beat or bully ourselves on any given day.

“I’m so stupid”

“I’m bad”

“What’s wrong with me?”

“I’m so fat”

“I’m not worthy”

“I’m the worst wife ever”  (My personal favorite)

I’m sure you have some of your favorites too.  What do these statements accomplish?  Why do we say them to ourselves?  Mostly, because we want to be right!!!  Right about where we are – stuck in some rut.

This kind of negative self-talk will tend to show up when we are starting to create some new habits like eating healthier, quitting an addiction, training for a half marathon :-) , or just trying to do better for ourselves and for our family.

Changing a behavior doesn’t tend to happen over night.  It takes time, intention, focus, determination and some accountability too.

Here is a simple solution that has helped myself and my coaching clients to stop beating themselves up with their “golden hammer” and begin to live in victory.

Recognize your ”WINS” each day!!!

I know life changing, right?

So here is an example:

If you are trying to stop smoking, but today you had 3 cigarettes.  Instead of saying, “I’m a bad person and can never do this,” say wow that is 3 less than yesterday!!  Recognize that you are moving closer to quitting.  If you are releasing weight and you eat a piece of chocolate or 1 cupcake, think about what you would have done before you were consciously choosing to be healthier.  Maybe you would have eaten a whole bar of chocolate or a whole piece of cake rather than just a smaller portion.  That is a WIN!!

The golden hammer does not need to come out any longer and beat you up.

Put it away!!!

I’m all about wins and about helping YOU finish.

So many people have wonderful ideas for changing the world, for creating new businesses, to expand their existing business etc. but something inside keeps them from not finishing or for some ever starting.

This is one of the big “Whys” I started Weekend of Wins.  Through a half marathon experience and myself as your cheerleader, you have the opportunity to build renewed confidence and evidence that you can finish.  Therefore, when you go to fulfill that dream of building that business, writing that book or being free of that addiction you can look back and say, “if I can do it there then I can do it here.” That “win” provides the evidence needed for YOU to move forward.

The same is true everyday.  As you begin to recognize your WINS, you will have the confidence to continue to push through and reach your finish line.
