Crabby Scabby – Where is Your Focus? by Michelle D. Howe

Do you remember when you were a kid and you fell off your bike. What happened next?  Most likely, you ended up with some cuts, scraps, blood and some tears.  Once mom came to the rescue it was all better, right?

Yes and no!

I’m sure you felt better with Mom’s love and attention in that moment but days later you still continue to focus on your “boo boos” and keep asking mom to put band aids on them.

When my girls get a cut or scrap about a day later after the scab has formed, they pick at it and it begins to bleed again.  I tell them “Don’t pick off God’s band-aid.”  God put that scab there to heal the cut so don’t pick it.

Wow, what reminder of what can happen when our focus is on all the negative “stuff” in our lives rather than all the healthy good “stuff” going on around us.  It’s like when you are looking at a cut or sore on your arm and just focusing on that rather than seeing all the other healthy skin around it.

This is what you do when your focus keeps rehashing or picking at the negative”stuff” in your life.

Stuff like disappointments with your spouse or kids.

Disappointments at your work

Discouragement with your goals

Discontentment with your life

When you sit in this place, you will not find satisfaction and contentment anywhere in your life.  Just like the child that only stares, complains, cries about their boo boo.

God really doesn’t want to watch you stay in this place, picking and digging at your scabs.  He wants to heal those wounds, cuts, and sores in your life and use them to grow you, your character, your perspective closer to Him.   He desires to turn your focus from the pain to what can be gained.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.  Phil 4:8-9

The Lord wants our focus on Him and His purposes not on everything wrong in our lives.  Discontentment in one area of your life will want to find evidence for discontentment in all areas of your life so that you can be right in being mad or sad.
